Nature Heals

Mother was right when she said, 'go outside and play'. For many of us, something really changes for us as we take a few steps into nature. Our breathing changes and our hearts beat more slowly. We notice the crispness of the air, the familiar smell of soil and trees and plants. There is something magical about being in nature, and just a few minutes of being outside can make us feel healed and restored.

If this describes you, you’re not alone. A growing body of science is showing that nature is really good for you, and that  even the simple act of looking at natural scenes out a window can have remarkable effects on health. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones we now know, do significant damage to bodies over time. Where pharmaceuticals  now exert a ubiquitous presence in people's lives, turning to nature as a method for 'rebalancing' ourselves is incredibly powerful medicine.

If you’re looking to improve your health, mental or physical, in the new year, one way to do so is to get out into the open air. And if you exercise or socialize while you’re out there, all the better!
